Presentation Description:

  • Understand current societal trends and identify applicable coaching and professional development needs for EFNEP peer educators.
  • Identify strategies for providing professional development opportunities with other states
  • Review conference evaluation feedback and staff’s application of new material for effectively reaching EFNEP audiences

Last fall, Illinois hosted a professional development conference for the North Central Region to equip peer education staff for networking, building health and strengthening relationships. The workshops focused on deepening the skill set of the staff in their daily efforts to locate, engage, enroll, teach, graduate and evaluate groups of limited resource participants who are facing current societal challenges.  Since EFNEPs inception, society has changed drastically and peer education staff need to be equipped with broader skills to effectively engage participants.  Coaching staff is an integral, ongoing process to promote behavior change among families and identified areas for professional development included:

  • Creating healthy group dynamics and engagement with adults
  • Developing social and emotional intelligence among teams
  • Exploring trauma informed education
  • Facilitating discussion on creating inclusive and affirming spaces for LGBTQ communities
  • Examining food justice, equity and access issues
This presentation will guide you through the planning process and the tools provided to staff to effectively engage with participants.
